Vinted Tax Calculator

Selling your own unwanted clothes on Vinted is unlikely to be taxable, however many items you sell. Buying to resell is trading. Check which you are, and whether Vinted will report you to HMRC.

Estimate only — not tax advice. Figures use published HMRC rates and thresholds for the selected tax year; your actual bill depends on your full return.

What this calculator does

It starts from the question most Vinted sellers actually have: do I owe tax on this? The selector begins on selling your own unwanted belongings. Enter your sales and the number of items and you get the answer for that case, plus the platform reporting check. Switch to buying or making items to resell and the calculator tests the £1,000 trading allowance and works out the tax on your profit.

Clearing out your wardrobe

gov.uk says you are unlikely to pay tax if you sell personal items from your home, such as the contents of a loft or garage. Clothes you bought for yourself and no longer wear fall into that group. The number of items you sell does not change it. Selling a large number of items from your own wardrobe is still clearing out, not a business.

When Vinted selling becomes trading

If you buy or make goods to sell at a profit, you are likely to be trading and you pay tax on the profit. That includes buying clothes from charity shops, car boots or wholesalers to sell on, and making items to sell. Once you are trading, the first £1,000 of sales in the tax year is covered by the trading allowance, and above that you register for Self Assessment.

Will Vinted tell HMRC?

Digital platforms report sellers of goods to HMRC unless the seller makes fewer than 30 sales and receives no more than €2,000 (about £1,700) in a calendar year. HMRC's guidance for online sellers names eBay and Vinted as examples: if you have sold at least 30 items or earned roughly £1,700 (€2,000), your platform will let you know your information has been shared with HMRC. That is not a new tax, and gov.uk says sharing sales data does not automatically mean you need to complete a tax return.

Gross sales, not profit

When you are trading, the £1,000 allowance is tested on sales before costs. Sales of £1,200 with £800 of costs are over the limit. The allowance is one figure for all your trading, so Vinted resales add to eBay, Etsy or freelance income. Platforms report by calendar year, but your tax is by tax year, so the two totals will differ.

A worked example

Someone sells 80 items of their own old clothes for £1,900 in a year. Because these are personal belongings, there is no tax to pay. But 80 items is over 30 sales, so the platform is likely to share the account with HMRC, which is a report and not a bill. Now suppose a seller buys £3,500 of stock to resell and sells it for £6,000 with £400 of fees and postage, on a £30,000 salary. The costs of £3,900 beat the £1,000 allowance, the profit is £2,100, and Income Tax is £420.

Valuable one-off items

A personal possession sold for more than £6,000 may bring Capital Gains Tax into play, and the figure also applies to the total value of a set of items. That is a separate matter from trading tax. A designer handbag sold above that figure could be affected; ordinary clothes are not.

What this calculator does not cover

It does not decide for you whether you are trading: that depends on your facts, such as why you bought the items. It uses England, Wales and Northern Ireland rates and treats your other income as one figure. It is an estimate, not advice.

FAQ

Questions about the vinted tax calculator

Do I pay tax on Vinted?

Not usually if you sell your own unwanted items. If you buy items to resell at a profit you are trading, and the first £1,000 of sales in a tax year is covered by the trading allowance.

Does Vinted report to HMRC?

Platforms report sellers who make 30 or more sales, or receive more than about £1,700 (€2,000), in a calendar year. gov.uk says this does not by itself mean you owe tax.

How many items can I sell on Vinted before paying tax?

There is no item count for tax on your own belongings. The 30-sale figure is for platform reporting, not a tax threshold.

Is Vinted income treated as trading income?

Only if you buy or make items to sell at a profit. Selling things you owned for your own use is generally not trading.

Do I need to register for Self Assessment for Vinted?

If you are trading and your sales are over £1,000 in a tax year, yes, by 5 October after the tax year ends.

What if I sell a valuable item?

Capital Gains Tax can apply if you sell a personal possession for more than £6,000.
