Can I pay my Self Assessment bill through my tax code?
Yes, if you owe less than £3,000 (you cannot part-pay to get under it), you already pay tax through PAYE, and you submitted your online return by 11:59pm on 30 December, or a paper return by 31 October. HMRC then collects the tax through your tax code instead of a lump sum.

When you cannot use it
gov.uk lists three further blocks. You cannot use the route if you do not have enough PAYE income for HMRC to collect the amount, if you would pay more than 50% of your PAYE income in tax, or if you would end up paying more than twice as much tax as you normally do.
Self-employed people also cannot pay Class 2 National Insurance this way, unless it has been due since before 6 April 2015.
Why 30 December matters
The 30 December date is a month earlier than the normal 31 January filing deadline, so a return sent in January misses the option and the bill has to be paid directly. If you are an employee with a small bill from savings, rental or a side income, filing before Christmas can spare you a lump sum.
